The Balurghat Law College was established in the year of 2001. The college was affiliated to the University of North Bengal till 2007. In the year of 2008, the University of Gour Bongo come into existence by the virtue of the Gour Bongo University Act 2007 and automatically Balurghat Law College came under the purview of the University of Gour Bongo as per the jurisdiction of the University Act, 2007. Presently the college is permanently affiliated to the University of Gour Bongo. The Bar Council of India has approved the affiliation. The Govt. of West Bengal has also approved the college.

At this initial stage the Balurght Law College did not have its own land and buildings. The founders, organizer and manager of the college opened the journey of legal education (5Year integrated B.A,LL.B Course) at Balurghat College premises with due statutory formalities. On 7th June 2002 the Balurghat Law College received 4.17 acre vested lease hold land in a Panchayet area at Mouza-Paschim Rabinagar,Thana- Balurghat, District Dakshin Dinajpur from the Land Reforms Department, Government of West Bengal. This college also received development funds from the Uttar Banga Unnyan Parisad, D.M, and M.L.A. fund, Dakshin Dinajpur ZiIla Parishad, Municipalities etc. for the construction of buildings and infrastructural development. With this aforesaid land and financial assistance from the aforesaid local authorities, the college authority set up the own buildings of Balurghat Law College for the smooth running of legal education. On 21.05.2005 the Balurghat Law College shifted its good office along with the students, teaching and non-teaching staffs to its own Buildings at Post-Amrita Khanda Hat, Mouza-Paschim Rabinagar,Thana- Balurghat,District Dakshin Dinajpur from Balurghat College. Now the college is imparting legal education at its own campus. (Post-Amritakhanda Hat, Mouza-Paschim Rabinagar, Panchayat-6 No Danga Gram Panchayat, Thana- Balurghat,District Dakshin Dinajpur).

Couple of days back the college was governed by the Administrator, Dr. Rathin Bandyopadhyay, Associate Professor, Dept. of Law, N.B.U. appointed by the University of Gour Bongo as per the direction of the Horrible Calcutta High Court. {Case no: W.P.No.20654 (W) of 2012 and W.P.37441 (W) of 2013}

Presently the college is governed by the Governing Body, Balurghat Law College. In the year of 2014 the State Govt. sanctioned Grant-in-Aid Rs.1,00,00000/-(One Crore) to the said college for the development of the college.

Balurghat Law College is the only one Law College within three districts namely: D/Dinaipur, U/Dinajpur and Malda. The college attracts and fulfills the need of students not only from the different parts of the State of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Sikkim but also attracting students from the neighbouring country that is the Bangladesh.

The specialties of the college are that: Oldest College (Estd. 2001), Lowest Course Fee (7,420 per Sem.), SC/ST & Minority Scholarship Cell, NSS Unit, Largest Green & Ragging Free Campus (4.17 acre), Well Equipped Library, Good Class Room, Experienced Faculties, High Extolled Result & Good Achievement of the Students.

Intake capacity of the college is 360 Students per Semester of the academic session.
